SEED / PLUS TREE SPECIES IN FOREST RESERVES IN GHANA
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The mandate of Forestry Commission is to sustainably
develop and manage the nation’s forest resources, Manual Of
Procedures (MOP) have been developed for the operational
activities to manage the forest resources in the forest
reserves in the country. It is also enshrined in MOP D that
during stock survey, identified trees with very good phenotypes
should be selected with inscription of ‘’ S” as seed trees where
their seeds could be collected to be propagated artificially or
allow them to provide viable seeds for natural regeneration.
Resource Management Support Centre monitors these seed/Plus
trees in the Production and Provenance Compartments in the
forest reserves within the forest zones of Ghana
The Government of Ghana acknowledging the threats of climate
change and the growing cost of natural resource degradation
(10 per cent of GDP) adopted an integrated approach to a
long-term goal of achieving sustainable development by
aligning the country’s natural resource management and
economic development strategies. Subsequently, Ghana applied
to the Climate Investment Fund (CIF), and got approval for
the implementation of a Forest Investment Program (FIP) in
November 2012
